Preparing a Work Brief

Before you contact any contractors, draw up a basic statement describing the work you want done. This process will clarify matters in your mind and enable you to prepare a useful brief for potential contractors. It also makes a good starting point if you want to hire an architect.
It can be as simple as:
'I have a two-bedroom third-floor apartment, built in the 1970s, which needs new plumbing, rewiring, and central heating installed. Floors and walls will have to be made good afterwards. Do you handle this type of work?'
