Step-by-Step Conversion Guide

Step 1
The first thing to do is to create safe access to the loft space. Do this where the stairs will eventually be positioned.
Step 2
Will you be able to carry all the materials through the house and through this access? If not, make an opening in the roof - in a place where you will be installing a window. This will also give natural light to work by. Builders should be ready to cover the gaps with plastic sheeting if the window is not fitted immediately.
Step 3
If installing skylights, black frames look less obviously new than light timber ones, especially on older roofs. If you build a dormer window, make sure that the pitch, scale, and style are sympathetic to the existing roofline.
Step 4
Install services (electricity, central heating, other plumbing) before you put down the new floor.
Step 5
If you remove insulation from under the new floor, heat rising from the rest of the house will keep the chill from the loft room.
Step 6
Insulate the roof and the gap between the roof and the sloping walls. Don't block ventilation around roof timbers - building regulations may apply.
