Using the Fridge Safely

Fridge Temperature

Try to get into the habit of using a fridge thermometer to ensure that the temperature remains between 0-5°C / 32-41°F. Put a shelf with a built-in thermometer - a useful feature to look for when buying a new fridge - at the top of a larder fridge. Larder fridges tend to be colder at the bottom, while fridges with a built-in ice box have a more even temperature. It's especially important to keep a check if the temperature of your kitchen varies widely through the year, or if the fridge door is opened frequently.

Cooling Food Down

Don't put large quantities of hot food into the fridge in one container. Foods do not cool right through as quickly as they should to prevent bacteria multiplying. Divide into smaller, shallow dishes, for faster cooling.

When storing stuffed meats or poultry, remove the stuffing and refrigerate it separately.

While a well-stocked fridge helps save electricity, don't overfill the fridge - leave enough space for air to circulate freely.
