Setting Out the Tiles

- Find the middle of the two longest walls and mark across the room between these points with a chalk line.
- Do the same for the shorter walls, marking a second line on the floor. The centre of the room is where the lines cross. If you have a dominant feature in the room, such as a fireplace, centre the line in the middle of the feature instead of the middle of the wall.
- Place the corner of one of your tiles in the angle formed by the two lines to check that they are at right angles to each other, adjusting the shorter line if needed.
- Lay out the tiles, without adhesive, from the point where the lines cross, to check the setting out is correct. If there are thin gaps left at the edges of the room, adjust the lines. If necessary, remove one row of tiles and shift all of them either to the left or the right, leaving a larger gap at the borders - you should aim to leave more than half a tile width at each edge.
